Tree Planting Basics
Heads up: this is an independent, unofficial information guide — not the Association’s official website. Details (membership, events, directory, contacts) change and may be out of date or incomplete here. Always confirm current information with the St. Louis Arborist Association directly.
The right tree in the right place, planted correctly, can thrive for generations. Here are general principles — not a substitute for advice tailored to your yard.
General good practices
- Choose a species suited to your space, soil, and climate
- Plant at the proper depth — don’t bury the root flare
- Give roots room; loosen surrounding soil
- Mulch properly (avoid piling mulch against the trunk)
- Water consistently while the tree establishes
For species selection and placement near homes, utilities, or sidewalks, a certified arborist can help you plan.
